Commercial Freeze-Dried White Peony Root Slice Production
In 2015, a traditional Chinese medicine processor in China used an SDG750 20㎡ commercial freeze dryer to produce freeze-dried white peony root slices for Chinese medicinal material processing.
The product was Chinese medicinal white peony root slices. Compared with ordinary fruit or vegetable products, medicinal root slices require careful drying control because final moisture, product temperature, appearance, structure, and storage stability all affect product quality.
For this project, white peony root slices were cut to approximately 1.5 mm thickness and loaded at 12.2 kg per square meter. With a total drying area of 20㎡, the batch loading capacity reached approximately 244 kg per batch.
The drying process was controlled to keep the product temperature below 60°C. The drying cycle was completed in approximately 13 hours, and the final moisture content reached 1.16%.
This calculation helps buyers understand real production capacity. Drying area alone is not enough; loading density, slice thickness, temperature control, and drying time must be evaluated together.
The Challenge: Drying 1.5 mm White Peony Root Slices Below 60°C
White peony root slices require careful drying control. If the process is unstable, the product may show uneven moisture, poor appearance, or inconsistent batch quality.
1.5 mm Slice Thickness
Thin slicing helped improve drying uniformity, but it also required stable loading and careful process control.
Below 60°C Product Temperature
The customer required product temperature control during drying to reduce excessive heat exposure.
Low Final Moisture
The final moisture content reached 1.16%, supporting storage stability and packaging.
Vacuum Stability
The drying process operated within a 26–90 Pa vacuum range.
Cold Trap Capacity
The condenser capacity was designed at 2 kg water/㎡/hour.
Energy Control
The energy consumption was approximately 1.79 kWh per kg of fresh material.
SDG750 20㎡ Freeze Dryer
The SDG750 freeze dryer was selected to support commercial Chinese medicinal material processing with stable vacuum control, reliable cold trap capacity, controlled heat input, and predictable drying results.
- 20㎡ drying area for commercial production
- 1.5 mm Chinese medicinal white peony root slices
- Product temperature controlled below 60°C during drying
- 12.2 kg/㎡ loading density and approx. 244 kg per batch
- 26–90 Pa vacuum range during drying
- 13-hour drying cycle with 1.16% final moisture
Real Drying Data for White Peony Root Slices
This section gives buyers practical reference data. It shows how slice thickness, temperature control, loading density, vacuum range, cold trap capacity, final moisture, and energy use affect actual production performance.
In this project, the SDG750 processed about 244 kg of 1.5 mm white peony root slices per batch. The drying cycle was completed in 13 hours, and the final moisture content reached 1.16%.

Why These Data Points Matter
For Chinese medicinal material processors, real production data is more useful than general machine descriptions. These parameters help estimate output, freeze dryer cost, and equipment suitability.
1. Slice Thickness
The product was cut to approximately 1.5 mm thickness. Thin slices can improve drying uniformity, but buyers still need to evaluate loading density, drying time, final moisture, and product quality together.
2. Temperature Control
The customer required the product temperature to remain below 60°C during drying. This helped reduce excessive heat exposure and supported stable quality for Chinese medicinal material processing.
3. Energy Consumption
The energy consumption was approximately 1.79 kWh per kg of fresh material. Based on 244 kg per batch, the estimated electricity use was about 436.76 kWh per batch.
What Chinese Medicine Manufacturers Can Learn from This Case
This China freeze-dried white peony root slices project shows that medicinal material freeze-drying equipment should be evaluated by real drying performance, process control, and energy cost.
Product Form Matters
White peony root slices dry differently from fruit slices, cooked rice, tropical fruits, or leafy herbs. Slice thickness and tissue structure should be tested.
Temperature Control Matters
For Chinese medicinal material processing, product temperature control can be as important as drying time and final moisture.
Ask for Real Drying Data
Batch load, slice thickness, product temperature, final moisture, vacuum range, condenser capacity, and energy use provide more value than general supplier claims.
Match Machine Size to Production Stage
A 20㎡ freeze dryer can be a practical choice for commercial Chinese medicinal material processing before scaling to larger systems.
